Design With Intention Series: Choose Your Rug First

Home is where the heart is, and that's a good thing since we are all at home with those closest to us these days. As we've watched winter give way to spring these past few weeks, and seen the gray skies and barren landscape begin to brighten up, we have also worried about the threat posed by COVID-19.

Yet when you look out the window or take a walk, you'll notice that not even a virus can stop the coming of spring, and the hope that soon, all will be well again. It's hard not to be inspired by nature bringing out her springtime best, with vibrant green leaves gracing the trees and shrubs, while flowers in all colors burst from winter dormancy.

Design With Intention — Curate Your Colors

It's only natural that you'd want to bring some of that breathtaking, yet soothing, beauty into your home. It's also quite likely that once you can go out and shop again, you'll be carried away by simply being out of the house that you'll buy everything you love at random, without thinking through why you're buying yellow throw pillows and tangerine lamps.

Designing your home with intent not only delivers a polished and elegant final product, but saves you a great deal of time and money in the long run. Take advantage of your time at home by virtually decorating your rooms, playing with aquas, teals, and cobalt blues until you find just the right shade.

Interior designers love to freshen up a room's palette when spring comes, to literally take away the darker hues of winter with lighter shades and pastels. Pink, paired with camel and white accents, is on-trend without being trendy. Muted greens, in colors like sage and olive, bring the outdoors in and are timeless and sophisticated. Pops of pastels are guaranteed to brighten any space, accessorize with throws, accent pillows, and lampshades that you can switch out seasonally.

The First Step? Anchor Your Space

An area rug is essential to creating a harmonious vibe to your room. It quite literally anchors the space and provides the backdrop (or floordrop, if you will) for everything else in the room. The right rug sets the tone--an intentionally faded Oushak style rug in your dining room or library enhances fine furniture, while a small geometric in a Greek key design sets a sophisticated tone in your foyer.

In earlier times, rugs were considered works of art and were highly valued by their owners. Modern rug designers are embracing that ancient approach to textiles, and creating textile works of art that stand on their own in a room. These rugs work beautifully in a minimalist esthetic. An example would be an op-art rug in a rainbow of colors, in a sleek and modern space.  What about a soothing blue rug in a pattern that resembles Van Gogh's Starry Night? Imagine a rug like this in a room overlooking a wooded yard, and how calm you'd be relaxing there after a long day.

Once you've chosen your rug, watch how quickly the rest of the room comes together.
